REFLECTION PAPER GUIDE SOC 29000 Diversity & Social Justice The papers will require learning community members (LCM) to utilize course terms and theories in addressing the key aspects of the assignments. The objective is to demonstrate competent, if not critical understanding of the reflection paper topic. Approaches/Context (or options for content) to the paper can be historical, a specific issue within the topic, a recent or current event related to the topic, a current or historical icon/leader related to the topic. At some point in the reflection paper LCMs must connect the content and topic to the impact on their life (and/or family. culture, community, etc). Thus, bringing in the “reflection” component. Keep in mind; this is NOT a book report. It is an academic reflection paper; therefore, critical thinking applied to and a competent understanding of the topic will be key assessment points. LCMs will be required to utilize course content including terms (be sure to define and provide citations for them!). The textbook should be one of your references, however, it should not be your only reference. No, this is not a research paper; yet some research may be necessary to reach a competent understanding of the topic. Keep in mind; references also help shape the context and point-of-view of the reflections. Topics Reflection Paper 1: Race and Politics Due Sunday February 11 by 11:59 PM Reflection Paper 2: Race and Economics Due Sunday Match 24 by 11:59 PM Reflection Paper 3: Racial Justice Due Sunday May 5 by 11:59 PM More on the reflection component Reflections allow LCMs to share their point-of-view on, experience with, and/or impact on their life currently or moving forward connected to the topics: Race and Economic, Race and Politics, and Racial Justice. For some community members it may take a little more critical thinking/effort to connect the personal component than it will other members. Yet, there is certainly a personal connection for all of us related to each of the three reflection paper topics. Some examples of personal points-of-view (pov)/context: Generational context Cultural context Micro personal context (direct experiences) Ethnic context Religion or Spiritual context Political/Civic engagement POV of activism Personal financial pov Family Legacy This is not an exhaustive list; yet it should be enough to get community members started on the critical thinking path and personal journey reflection. Formatting • All assignments must be typed, using APA style for all references (which must cite the book and any other resources used). • Papers must be double-spaced using 12 point font and 1 inch margins. Your paper should include a header with your name and the assignment ONLY. Failure to follow instructions will result in a point deduction. • All assignments must be submitted via Blackboard by 11:59PM on the due date. Do not email them! • Any assignments not submitted by the deadline specified will not be accepted. 2
