I. Assignment Write a short paper (500-600 words) objecting to the argument given below. You don’t need to spend time explaining the argument. You should just launch into your objection (though make sure you explain yourself fully). Your primary goal is to write a persuasive, clear, well-argued paper explaining why this argument is not a good argument. You can present more than one objection, but be sure to give a sustained argument in favor of any objections you develop. Doing this effectively will require that you understand the argument you are objecting to. In writing your paper, you might–for example–choose to argue that a particular premise is false by presenting a convincing argument about why your reader should think that is the case. You should also evaluate what consequences your objection has for the overall argument. Is there something Epicurus could change to rescue their argument? Here is a summary of what you need to do: 1. Explain and defend your objection to Epicurus’s argument. 2. Evaluate the objection. For example, you could address the following questions: A. How serious a problem does the objection pose for Epicurus’s argument? B. Is there a way out of the problem for Epicurus? Is there an argument he could provide, or a change he could make to defend his position? If so, explain it. 3. What overall conclusion do you come to about Epicurus’s argument? II. The Text You should refer to the following form of the argument, which is in standard form. The harmlessness of death argument* 1. Death is annihilation. 2. The living have not yet been annihilated (otherwise they wouldn’t be alive). 3. Therefore, death does not affect the living. (from 1 and 2) 4. So, death is not bad for the living. 5. For something to be bad for somebody, that person has to exist. 6. The dead do not exist. 7. Therefore, death is not bad for the dead. (from 5 and 6) 8. Therefore, death is bad for neither the living nor the dead. (from 4 and 7) It is a reconstruction of the following text from Epicurus: The man speaks but idly who says that he fears death not because it will be painful when it comes, but because it is painful in anticipation. For that which gives no trouble when it comes, is but an empty pain in anticipation. So death, the most terrifying of ills, is nothing to us, since so long as we exist, death is not with us; but when death comes, then we do not exist. It does not then concern either the living or the dead, since for the former it is not, and the latter are no more. III. The Logic Flow I wrote in class: 1. Death’s impact extends beyond mere annihilation, influencing memories and emotions of the living. 2. Anticipation and fear of death profoundly affect the living’s mental and emotional state. 3. Grief, loss, and mortality contemplation due to death significantly impact the living. (from 1 and 2) 4. Emotional and psychological consequences of death render it a negative experience for the living. (from 3) 5. Harms caused by death’s anticipation or the loss of loved ones expand the definition of “bad.” (from 4) 6. Legacies and memories of the dead continue to affect the world, challenging their nonexistence. 7. Viewing death as deprivation of future possibilities frames it as a loss, even for the nonexistent. (from 5 and 6) 8. The comprehensive effects on the living and the conceptual loss for the dead suggest death can indeed be considered “bad” in a broader sense.
