Discussion #12 (550-650 word response)
According to Betty Friedan (and any additional research you may need to conduct), what was “the problem that has no name”? Describe, explain and provide concrete examples. What demographic did it pertain to? Which women were not including in this analysis?
What happened when Betty Friedan exposed this silent problem? Reactions were mixed, some feeling relieved and galvanized into action while others in society dismissed this problem. Describe both reactions and explain why the reactions were as they were. Again, details and examples to support your claims.
How was “the problem that has no name” a perfect example of what is meant by “the personal is political”?
Finally, do we have a contemporary “problem that has no name”? Why or why not? And, if so, how is it the same and/or different compared to Betty Friedan’s observations and analysis during the early 1960s or what is known as the Women’s Liberation Movement/Second Wave of Feminism?
Discussion #13 (550-650 word response)
One of the most crucial aspects of the second wave of feminism was the emergence of the voices of women of color, especially the critique first offered by black feminists and the insistence that feminism include all women, not just white middle-class women. Their unique standpoint allowed them to create a new framework of analysis, one most commonly referred to as Let’s examine writing by black feminists on the need to have a more diverse understanding of women’s loves and a feminism to reflect that fact.
According to Patricia Hill Collins, what is “black feminist thought”? Why was (and is) it necessary and what are the benefits and effects of this framework of understanding? What attempts have been made to suppress it? While many view this perspective as emerging out of the 1970s, it can be traced back to Maria Stewart. Describe her role in constructing this framework.
In the article by Brooks, how does she describe black feminism applying to everyday life (and why is it important)?
